Air Canada Adds Fat Surcharge

September 19, 2008 by admin

In response to increasing operating costs, Air Canada has introduced a new surcharge that will require overweight and oversized people to pay more. The surcharge, already nicknamed by bloggers as the ‘fatcharge’, will be in effect for all Air Canada flights starting next Tuesday.

This specific surchage had been considered for years, but was forced into the forefront last June when a customer avoided paying a baggage fee by hiding his luggage under his shirt and pretending that he was obese (see photo).

Janet Sharp, a spokesperson for Air Canada, says, “After that one incident of ‘baggage-belly’ we were forced to take immediate action to prevent further incidents in the future.  And this is why we are introducing the new surcharge.”

The surcharge will be based on how much you weigh in relation to your height.  Therefore, when you arrive at the airport and check your baggage, now you’re also going to have to check your weight.  If your size is within the guidelines, then there is no additional cost.  If your size is greater than the guidelines, then you better have your wallet ready.  The details are still unknown, Air Canada has announced that they will be posted on their website before the end of the weekend.

Jake Tallon, President of the Narrow Person’s Society, is extremely happy with today’s announcement.  “We’ve been discriminated against for decades by having to pay the same amount for a ticket when some people are essentially getting a ‘two for one,’ said Tallon.

The Overweight Society predictably feels different.  “This is disgusting, and we demand the cancellation of this surcharge” said Hans Plumperson, Treasure of the Society.  Plumperson had no further comments because he was distracted by a passing ice cream truck.

Asked whether this new surcharge will be long-term, Sharp responded by saying, “We’ll just have to ‘weight’ and see. Pun intended.”
