Breaking News: Brian Burke Signs In Toronto

November 23, 2008 by Joe Nathan

Free agent NHL General Manager Brian Burke made the trip Monday to sign in Toronto. Having recently been released of his responsibilities with the Anaheim Ducks, Burke was in Toronto to provide signings for his new book, How To Succeed as a GM in the NHL. Burke has been quick to start a new chapter in his career (pun intended).

Richard Peddie, President and CEO of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment thinks Burke’s new book is sure to be a huge success. “It already has more hype in Toronto than the Da Vinci Code,” said Peddie. “Brian Burke is the Mona Lisa of basketball.”

Some of the more interesting chapters of the book include:

I Drafted Pronger (the story of his only successful draft)

St. Louis has the Flu, and the Blues (the Canucks’ incredible playoff run of 2003 in which they won one playoff series)

Make Sure the GM Before You Knows How to Draft (a chapter dedicated to Brian Murray’s genius at drafting extremely talented young players like Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry)

Hype Hype Hype, and More Hype (a chapter about how it’s more important to get your name in the media than it is to actually do a good job, like drafting talented players)

To write the book, Burke employed the same methods he used to win the Stanley Cup for the Ducks: He inherited an extremely talented team of writers and then put his name on the final copy.

Also present at the press conference was former Canucks’ GM Dave Nonis. Nonis was promoting his new book, Remember When I Traded For Roberto Luongo? That Was Awesome. Nonis’ book summarizes the incredible thrills and struggles of bringing Luongo to the Canucks.

“I’m really excited for Brian,” said Nonis. “He’s like a father figure for me. When I make bad decisions he treats me just like a son and grounds me for the weekend. This bruise on my cheek is because I said I thought Samsonov was worth trading for.”

It is rumored that Burke will hire Nonis as an assistant if he gets the job as Toronto Maple Leafs General Manager. If this is the case, then they’ll have to write a new chapter called, ‘No-nis, Yes-this, Burke-this.’
