First Vancouver Olympic Ticket Scam

October 4, 2008 by Matthew Mcgarnickle

Angus Nedry, a 45 year old resident of Vancouver, has the dubious distinction of the being the first to fall for a Vancouver 2010 Olympics ticket scam.

Nedry received an email last week that indicated he could bypass the complicated ticket application process by visiting the website: www.vancouverolympicticketsforsupercheapseriously.com. Nedry, a self-proclaimed sucker for a good deal, couldn’t resist the opportunity.

“I’ve always followed the motto that if the deal looks to good to be true, it must be real,” said Nedry.

Nedry started to think that something was wrong because the events he purchased tickets for weren’t in the official Olympic schedule. “I bought 2 tickets for Snowball Fighting and 2 tickets for the Men’s Floor Hockey Final. The tickets were $1000 each and I thought that was weird because that was such a great deal for those popular events. I also noticed that they weren’t in the online Olympics schedule but the company assured me that was just a typo.”

The website required Nedry to pay for the tickets in cash because that was ‘Olympic Tradition.’ So he mailed the cash to a PO Box address, but never received his tickets. To add insult to injury the scammers also convinced Nedry to buy ticket insurance just in case his tickets were stolen or destroyed in a volcano.

Nedry wants other people to be aware of these types of scams so they don’t suffer the same financial loss and embarrassment. “People should know that there are bad people out there who want to take advantage of their passion for Snowball Fighting.”

After hearing about this story, a local company contacted Nedry and sold him two real tickets for the Olympic Snowball Fighting event. Proving, that not everyone is out to make a quick buck.
