Kyle Wellwood: “Best Shape of My Life”
September 22, 2008 by admin
As the Canucks 2008 training camp draws to a close, Kyle Wellwood, forward for the Vancouver Canucks, claims that he’s in the best shape of his life. “I’ve never felt better,” said Wellwood, who was signed by the Canucks in the off-season from the Toronto Maple Leafs. “I’ve gained 25 pounds of muscle mass in my stomach which has allowed me to increase my eating speed.”
Wellwood has been plagued with injuries in the past and his summer signing by new Canucks GM Mike Gillis was considered a risky move. But after seeing him in training camp, Gillis no longer feels any concern. “He’s a real large presence out there,” said Gillis. “The kid’s got a lot of heart, and if he keeps this diet up he’s going to have a lot of heart problems.”
Alain Vigneault, coach of the Vancouver Canucks, is also impressed with Wellwood’s conditioning. “I had breakfast with Kyle this morning,” Vigneault said. “I’ve never seen a human being eat so much in my life. It was amazing; he truly is a gifted athlete.”
Wellwood’s Canucks teammates are already feeling the pressure to reach his level of fitness. So as long as Wellwood is around for the 2008/09 season, fitness levels won’t be a problem for the Vancouver Canucks.
