Opinion: My Grandma Has More Hockey Sense Than Mike Gillis

October 1, 2008 by Kevin Brockman

Dear Editor, it is with the utmost disgust that I write today about the current state of affairs of the Vancouver Canucks. Naming Roberto Luongo the team’s captain has reconfirmed my belief that Gillis doesn’t know what he’s doing.  How can Luongo be expected to take the ceremonial draws?  That is one of the most important duties for a team captain and Luongo has to hand them off to Mattias Ohlund.  What a joke.  The guys in the dressing room will all be so confused when they see Ohlund take the draw, shake the other captain’s hand…all while the “real” captain lounges in his crease “quietly leading” the team with curt nods up the ice.

What about the heart and soul of this team?  Yeah, that’s right, I’m talking about the Sedins.  These guys have more character than Winston Churchill and Ghandi combined.  If Gillis was going to go out and break the norm, he should have made the Sedins co-captains.  That would have sent a message to the rest of the league that the Canucks organization is ready to lay it all on the line.  Nobody cycles the puck better than the Sedins.  That alone makes them captain material in my mind.

What are the leadership qualities that make Luongo so great?  His hard work ethic?  His desire to always to improve and be the best he can be?  His ability to control the dressing room?  Those things aren’t tangible.  Cycling in the corner is something I can see.  I challenge Mike Gillis to change his mind and be the biggest man in the room.  Make the Sedins co-captains and we’ll all be drinking champagne from the Stanley Cup this fall.
